Jon Kabat Zinn
Trauma informed psychotherapist in Manhattan, New York City & Cape Cod. Working with patients since 2020, I am LGBTQ+ allied and offer individual and group therapy to adults and adolescents. I also have experience working as a Streetwork / Safe Horizon group and individual therapist for LGBTQ teens and young adults living in the New York City shelter system.
I often use a variety of methods in my work as different therapeutic approaches resonate with different people. Some of these include Psychoanalysis, Gestalt Therapy, dreamwork, guided meditation, mindfulness practices and somatic techniques to explore how we hold emotions in our bodies and process trauma.
My approach is grounded in a place of mindfulness with a focus on the present and what is happening for you in the moment. My style is experiential and skill based. I think therapy is most often a place to unlearn the ways in which we have come to see and limit ourselves and I will help you navigate this journey of self discovery. I will accompany you on your therapeutic discovery and provide you the push, support & safety needed to do the work of therapy.
I realize that the ingrained and habitual patterns of being with ourselves (and with the world) often come from somewhere important and sometimes hard to visit places within. For therapy to be successful both therapist and client must commit and involve ourself in the journey.
Therapy is for everyone. It can be hard to sit with sadness, fear and shame. And it can feel daunting to regroup and reset ourselves when we feel we must try to heal alone. As someone who was totally convinced that I had to do everything alone, my work as a therapist is a testament to my own ongoing unlearning of who I thought I had to be due to my profound childhood trauma.
While we can never return to the home we once had, we can create a new home in ourselves and discover new ways of being in our bodies and relating to ourselves and to some degree, the world.
I specialize in: trauma, life transitions and mindfulness based stress reduction.
